Biographical Note

Ambassador (Ret.) John E. Lange had a 28-year career in the Foreign Service. He received awards for his leadership of the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, after it was bombed by al-Qaeda on August 7, 1998. He then served from 1999-2002 as U.S. Ambassador to Botswana, where HIV/AIDS was his signature issue. He later was Deputy U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator at the inception of PEPFAR. He served as the State Department’s Special Representative on Avian and Pandemic Influenza from 2006-2009. He subsequently engaged in global health advocacy for four years at the Gates Foundation and currently is Senior Fellow for Global Health Diplomacy at the United Nations Foundation.
